Seattle

Hello Seattle!

We went on the duck tour riding in a bus that turned into a boat!

Wow!

Oh Pizza!

Okay...now I really need to write something to explain the following pictures.

I was at a business dinner in Scottsdale Arizona when someone first told me about the underground of Seattle.  "Really," my colleague said "there is a mirror image of Seattle under the ground"  I was so incredulous I actually pulled out my phone and fact checked.  She was right.  There is.  And it is amazing.

There was a fire the destroyed 33 blocks of the commercial district.  No one died but the city saw it as a chance to not build directly on the sand like they had before.  The city built all of the roads up one story on pillars.  The problem...it would take 7 years to complete.  The businesses didn't want to wait that long so they rebuilt at ground level.  For a while people would climb down a ladder to get from the street to the door of the store.  But after a few people died falling off the street the owners of the store built sidewalks at the street level and changed the second floor windows into doors.  The entrances underground were still open for a while.  It was lit by sky lights you can still see if you are walking around down town.  During prohibition era this underground Seattle became the speakeasies.  It also was the red light district and the opium dens.

Walking along the sidewalk knowing there is a sidewalk below me make Seattle feel different to me somehow.
